HIP REPLACEMENT

Hip replacement is a predictable and reliable operation to relieve the symptoms of hip arthritis and hip avascular necrosis. It is one of the most successful surgical procedures in medicine and was called a miracle of modern medicine by a leading medical journal 50 years after its introduction.

Hip replacement is offered to those who have suffered damage and deterioration of the hip joint or the cartilage surrounding it. Dr. Nelson offers a chance at a life free of pain by offering hip replacement surgery in Gilbert, Arizona, and the Southwest area of the US.

The Parts of a Hip

Before we discuss hip replacement surgery, it is best to discuss how exactly your hip works.

The hip joint is one of the body’s largest and most important joints, allowing for smooth, flexible movement. It’s a ball-and-socket joint, which means it has a ball-shaped head that fits into a rounded socket.

The “ball” rests on top of the femur (thigh bone); it is known as the femoral head. The “socket” is part of the pelvis, called the acetabulum.

These components work together to allow your hip to move in multiple directions, providing a wide range of motion. Both the ball and socket are lined with smooth, slippery cartilage that cushions the bones and helps them glide effortlessly against each other. Surrounding the joint is a synovial membrane, which produces fluid to lubricate the joint, reducing friction. Strong ligaments and muscles around the hip provide stability and support, ensuring the joint stays aligned while you move, walk, or stand.

The Hip Replacement Procedure

During this procedure, the damaged bone and cartilage of the hip are removed and replaced with prosthetic implants.

The deteriorated femoral head is removed and replaced with a metal stem. This stem is “press fit” or cemented into the center of the femur (thigh) bone. On the upper portion of the metal stem, either a metal or ceramic ball is placed, perfectly mimicking how a natural hip would work.

This ball acts as the new femoral head. To replace the socket (acetabulum), the damaged cartilage is removed and a metal socket is placed inside of the pelvic bone.

Sometimes, cement or screws are used to secure the socket. A dense plastic liner is placed between the new socket and ball, allowing for smooth movement of the new joint, just like cartilage.

The Benefits of a Hip Replacement Surgery

Hip replacement surgery can be life-changing for those suffering from chronic hip pain and limited mobility. Here’s how it can make a significant difference:

Pain Relief

One of the most immediate and noticeable benefits of hip replacement surgery is relief from chronic pain. Whether it’s pain from arthritis, injury, or wear and tear, replacing the damaged joint with an artificial one eliminates the source of pain, allowing you to move more comfortably.

Improved Mobility and Range of Motion

As the damaged joint is replaced, you regain a greater range of motion in your hip. This means activities like walking, bending, or climbing stairs can become easier and more fluid, helping you return to an active lifestyle.

Enhanced Quality of Life

Hip pain can significantly limit your daily activities, affecting everything from work to hobbies and socializing. After surgery, many patients find they can return to activities they once enjoyed, experiencing an overall improvement in their quality of life.

Recovering from a Hip Replacement Surgery

The hip replacement surgery will leave a small scar on the front of your leg if the hip replacement is done with the anterior approach. If your scar struggles to heal, you should contact Dr. Nelson immediately. He uses a “plastic-surgery”-like incision closure that does not require any staples or sutures that need to be removed.

He can also give recommendations for helping the scar heal quickly and can recommend you to a dermatologist in the area if you are particularly concerned about the appearance of the scar.
